This 8 week workshop series is designed to give trauma survivors a boost on their healing journey through education, exploration, inspiration, expression and encouragement. "I Rise" was named after the Maya Angelou poem "And Still I RISE" as a tribute. Angelou was a world-famous poet, dancer, singer, activist, author and scholar. She courageously addressed the trauma she experienced through art with unparalleled determination and remarkable resilience. The poem stands as a stunning, uplifting plea, urging us never to bend to adversity or abuse.
Along with education and self reflection attendees will be introduced to Maya Angelou and stories of other famous people who transformed trauma into triumph. Participants will be encouraged to express themselves through art, poetry and song. The class will also include an introduction to Polyvagal Theory which teaches us that symptoms of post-traumatic stress are rooted in biology and felt within the body. It explains why we can’t just think our way out of trauma responses.
This class is not a replacement for therapy. I Rise is meant to be an adjunct to other things survivors are already doing to recover.
